The IAS Exam is conducted every year by the central recruiting agency known as
the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC).

The Roles and

IAS officer will be working in;
●
Field Work and
Posting:
As discussed earlier,
there are 3 different sectors in which an IAS officer works, comparing all 3,
Fieldwork and posting are considered as one of the most difficult ones. In this
sector, you have to manage the basic yet most important affairs of the
government. It basically includes framing, implementing, and reviewing the
policies laid by the government. An IAS officer is responsible for finding
solutions for all the issues in the area by consulting different departments
and the representatives elected in that area. He/She is not only responsible
for disbursing funds to the needed issues but also for supervising the
implementation of the schemes, policies laid by the Government. In terms of
fieldwork, the officer is responsible for providing immediate assistance during
emergencies like natural disasters like floods, earthquakes, or any major
accidents or riots.
The first posting of
any IAS officer is always in the fields, he/she has to go through the field
study at the district level. Many officers work in the state secretariat
●State Secretariat/
Public Sector Undertakings:
In this sector, the
Officer is supposed to be experienced enough to apply his/her expertise in the
higher management sector. They are supposed to be guiding the elected
representatives to formulate the policies and effectively apply them. Many IAS
officers got posted as PSU cadres on Deputation. This opportunity provides
officers with a chance to be a part of the higher management for different PSU
sectors like Industrial Units, Power stations, and many more.
●
Central Secretariat:
IAS officers can be
posted in different sectors, and if the same officer gets posted on the
Secretarial level, he/she will be looking after the policies, formulating them,
and implementing those policies in different ministries. Sometimes an IAS
officer can be deputed to International Bodies such as the United Nations(UN).
For a limited period of time, an officer can be transferred to a private
organization.
