10 Things to know before you start preparing for UPSC Exam

Every exam is different and the path to crack it is different too. Every individual comes up with a different plan to score the highest rank, it may work for some while not for you. In this article, we will be discussing 15 things you should know before you start your preparation for a UPSC Exam. Let me tell you Experience matters a lot, but if you are smart working enough then you can even crack the exam on the first go. Let’s get started with these points.

1.     Smart work before Hard work. Prepare a strategy of what to study and what not to and then put your hard work into it.

2.     Study from Limited Source But study that religiously, no need to gather everything from everywhere.

3.     Practice writing answers for mains. The most important point.

4.     You have to take a mental note of how the marks are distributed. Your mere diversion of energy and focus will cost you hundreds of marks. Please be aware of this.

5.     For a better understanding of paper patterns and type of question, you must go through the previous year’s question papers of prelims, mains, and options.

6.     As mentioned earlier, you must study the previous year's question papers but also solve them diligently. You should at least solve 8-10 years’ prelims paper using a timer and 6-8 years’ Optional Papers.

7.     Revise the topic whenever you can, Just Revise, if you think you are 95% sure about the topic, still revise and make it 100%

8.     At least Study for 3-4 hours straight. It will help you to be focused and concentrate at the time of the exam.

9.     Always remember, Slow but steady wins the race, this means you must be consistent with whatever you are doing. In the same way, take some time to recharge your drain batteries.

10.  Presentation matters a lot. In Mains, try maximum to draw diagrams whenever possible.

Important Point :

In a Preliminary exam, solve all the questions you know. Do not leave more than 10 questions. To be on the safer side, always take a calculative risk.
