Eligibility Criteria for becoming an IAS Officer

Being an Indian, we are always told by our family to get a government job, even you have seen people how they are obsessed with the ones whom they knew who cracked exam and placed themselves in the position of any government job. In the last article, we had explained the overall benefits and responsibilities of an IAS officer. In this article, we will discuss the eligibility criteria for being an IAS officer.

The eligibility criteria for the IAS exam are based on various factors namely, Nationality, Age Limit, Educational Qualification, Attempt Limit, and medical Standards. These categories will be explained in detail. Check it out and know whether you are eligible for the IAS exam or not.

 

  1. Nationality: In this criteria, there are a few points that need to be considered;

a.       You must be a citizen of India.

b.      If you are a subject of Bhutan/Nepal (Subject of means, the citizen of the country is known as the subject of that country. This means, the citizen of Bhutan & Nepal are allowed to apply for the government exams in India)

c.       If you belong to the community of Tibetan Refugee who came to India to permanently settle here before 1 January 1962. 

d.      If you are an Indian by origin but migrated to the countries named Uganda, Burma, Pakistan, Zambia, the United Republic of Tanzania, Malawi, Sri Lanka, East African Countries of Kenya, Zaire, Ethiopia and Vietnam then you become eligible for the IAS Exam

e.       If you belong to any of the b, c or d then you just have to fill a certificate issued by Government of India while filling the examination form.

 

   II.        Age limit :

    1. You can fill IAS exam form if you are in between 21-32 years of age as on August 1, 2022 as per official notification.
    2. For IAS examination, there is a rule of age relaxation for certain reserved categories. If you belong to any of these reserved categories, then you should take a look at these following points;
      • General – No age relaxation (21 to 32 years)
      • OBC – 3 years (21 to 35 years)
      • SC/ST – 5 years (21 to 37 years)
      • Candidate having any kind of disability - 10 years (21 to 42 years)
      • Candidates originally domiciled from Jammu & Kashmir (01/01/1981- 31/12/1989) – 5 years (21 to 37 years)

 

 III.        Educational Qualification :

a.       The very basic educational qualification one must have to appear for IAS exam is to hold a graduation degree in any disciple from any recognized university.

b.      If you have Bachelor’s degree with any of these subjects namely botany, chemistry, physics, animal husbandry, mathematics, geology, Veterinary Science, statistics and zoology are eligible to apply in IAS exam.

c.       Applicants in their final year of graduation can also apply.

 

    IV.            IAS attempt limit :  UPSC has mentioned the number of attempts for every category of students, you can check how many attempts you are allowed to;

a.       General  - 6

b.      OBC – 9

c.       SC/ST – No limit

d.      General Physically Disabled – 9

e.       OBC Physically Disabled – 9

f.        SC/ST Physically Disabled – No limit

g.      Disabled Servicemen (General/ OBC/SC/ST) – No Limit
